- Implement strategies in the practice to reduce the emotional impact of an emergency on individuals and the team.
High Performance CPR (HPCPR) for Primary Care
- 8 Category 2 CPD Points (including compulsory BLS CPR)
- Activity Number: 191527
- HPCPR supersedes traditional Basic Life Support (BLS), CPR, (that is not intrinsically an appropriate fit for general practice). Whilst BLS is no more than what is expected of the general public;, practices are required to have more advanced equipment and drugs as part of accreditation requirements. HPCPR is designed to fill this gap, expand the skills of GPs and nurses that are bored with traditional, over-simplified training that does not recognise their skills and experience.
- Unlike traditional, basic CPR training, HPCPR (also referred to as "pit-crew" CPR) recognises that clinical staff in general practice are not actually going to attempt "mouth-to" methods on patients and can distinguish between witnessed, unwitnessed, hypoxic and traumatic cardiac arrests. HPCPR has been proven to significantly improve long-term survival of cardiac arrest patients over traditional BLS regimes.
- An new innovative program for GPs and nurses - delivered in the practice setting, using practice equivalent equipment. The program helps develop skills, organisation and the confidence to handle cardiac arrest emergencies with the latest intervention strategies, designed to improve survival.
- Based on a new approach to resuscitation (including the new HPCPR protocol) that incorporates the benefits of high performance skills and a focus on the interventions that are possible and most effective in the general practice (pre-ambulance) setting.
- Skills review includes HPCPR advanced ventilation and continuous compression techniques, the use of solid LMA airways and defibrillation.
- Free General Practice Emergency Guideline Book (setting out the 10 top emergencies in primary care and how to manage them)
- Course can be run in practices at a time that suits staff
- Duration: 4 Hours

- Use BVM device, insert oropharyngeal, nasopharyngeal and SG airways and use a manual defibrillator and/or AED; in the HPCPR strategy.
- Evaluate practice resources and readiness for a cardiac arrest event using HPCPR strategies.
- Complete simulated scenarios, including team leadership, appropriate clinical interventions for witnessed/unwitnessed SCA and Hypoxic Arrest.
- Describe the components of HPCPR and the benefits of long-term survival over traditional strategies and apply these as a team in time-critical situations.
